BMI Calculator with Indian / South Asian Cutoffs
Calculate your BMI using South Asian thresholds recommended by WHO and Indian medical associations. Indians develop metabolic complications at lower BMI values than Western populations — standard cutoffs underestimate your risk.
South Asian BMI Categories
- Below 18.5: Underweight
- 18.5-23.0: Normal weight
- 23.0-25.0: Overweight
- 25.0-30.0: Obese Class I
- 30.0-35.0: Obese Class II
- Above 35.0: Obese Class III
Why Different Cutoffs for Indians?
South Asians carry higher body fat percentage at the same BMI compared to Caucasians. The ICMR-INDIAB study found 43.3% of Indians with "normal" BMI are metabolically obese (thin-fat phenotype). Diabetes prevalence doubles at BMI 23 for Indians vs BMI 25 for Caucasians.
What BMI Qualifies for Semaglutide in India?
BMI 27+ with at least one comorbidity (diabetes, hypertension, PCOS, fatty liver, sleep apnea), or BMI 30+ alone. These are lower than Western thresholds of 30/27.
